About us

Our Mission is to foster an intimate theatre experience that engages, entertains, inspires and empowers both our artists and our audiences while providing the link between playwright/composer and our patrons.

Our Vision is to train and support the next generations of theatre artists for the next generations of audiences.

The Whangarei Repertory Society Inc (aka Octagon Theatre) came into being on April 8, 1948. The first play was staged at a private home in November 1948. From small beginnings, the Society’s number of drama enthusiasts and followers continues to grow. Read more about the history of the theatre here and to ensure a future, think how together we can continue to provide a unique, enjoyable and entertaining experience.

Freya Taylor

Freya Taylor Committee Member

Daytime funeral home owner and night time theatre volunteer. Because I can dress in sparkly clothes, be a touch cheeky to our lovely patrons and get away with it, I volunteer as the Front of House team member and as a waitress. Just obtained my bar licence to help out more at the theatre during shows. I love what goes on behind the scenes so much; I joined the committee in 2024.
I have been involved in acting in the past and loved it, and know what huge effort and commitment it takes from the actors, and the behind the scenes team members, (not forgetting their sacrificing time from their own families), to present a well put together show to our community.

Jean Millington Dining manager

Jean joined the Octagon Theatre in 2000 and was the Committee Secretary 2010-2019.  She has appeared in numerous productions and other roles have included Stage Manager, Props and Costumes.
